Books & Publications

There are so many ways to share experience, expertise, and ideas. I’d love to contribute what I know to your work and community, and connect you with others who have incredible perspectives to share.

I’ve had the privilege to contribute to books and publications about nonprofit technology, social media, and social impact for the last 15 years. My next book will be available in early 2022.

The Tech That Comes Next

The Tech That Comes Next book titleWhat is technology’s role in our work to create an equitable world?

Who is part of technology development, who funds that development, and how we put technology to use all influence the outcomes that are possible. To change those outcomes, we must – all of us – shift our relationship to technology, how we use it, build it, fund it, and more. In The Tech That Comes Next, Amy Sample Ward and Afua Bruce – two leaders in equitable design and use of new technologies – invite you to join them in asking big questions and making change from wherever you are today.

This book connects ideas and conversations across sectors from artificial intelligence to data collection, community centered design to collaborative funding, and social media to digital divides. Technology and equity are inextricably connected, and The Tech That Comes Next helps you accelerate change for the better.

Social Change Anytime Everywhere

Social Change Anytime Everywhere was written for nonprofit staff who say themselves or are asked by others, “Email communications, social media, and mobile are important, but how will they help our nonprofit and the issues we work on? Most importantly, how the heck do we integrate and utilize these tools successfully?” The book will help answer these questions, and is organized to guide readers through the planning and implementation of online multi-channel strategies that will spark advocacy, raise money and promote deeper community engagement in order to achieve social change in real time.

It also serves as a resource to help nonprofit staff and their boards quickly understand the evolving online landscape and identify and implement the best online channels, strategies, tools, and tactics to help their organizations achieve their missions.

Social By Social

NESTA commissioned this book in 2009, along with my co-authors Andy Gibson (Sociability) and David Wilcox (Social Reporter).  I have shared some pieces from the book on my blog, including the core 45 Propositions.  Andy, David, and I have also modified the Social Media Game to incorporate lessons and strategies from this handbook; the game was first deployed at the SHINE09 unconference.  You can purchase a copy of the book print-on-demand, or read it online and download it in PDF for free.
