Thanks, Debra! Glad to hear it got you thinking 🙂 I think you’ve picked up
exactly what I’m talking about here and that technology should not be
something that we think of as our own – especially tools that we know lots
of others are using! There’s huge potential to shape the tools we use by
recognizing that we can work together to share resources, highlight needs
and call for developments together.

I think this is a great way to think about the shift in approaches and mentality to technology. However, your statement “Focusing on shared goals means concentrating on the sweet spot – there’s a lot that can be achieved in that space” also got me thinking – it’s also forcing a shift in approaches to tech from thinking about tech as “my tech” or having a “first mover advantage” to thinking about tech as “shared tech” and “collaborative approaches to solving problems.” I may not have that quite right, but i wonder if there isn’t something to this. Your thoughts?

Hi Kristin-

Thanks so much for following up here with your question! In yesterday’s
Community Builder chat, we talked a bit about getting people on board with
technology but many of the responses could be applied equally to the
question of getting people aligned with a strategic use of technology. You
can see the full chat archive at the link below, but two of the highlights
to this point to give you an idea include: sending screen shots of great
posts/tweets/etc. that ignited conversation or community response around to
the team or organization to highlight the people doing things really well,
send a daily or weekly report of social media activity to managers and
senior leadership (and anyone else that wants it!) with highlights of what’s
happening in the social media spaces your organization maintains to give an
idea of who is there and what is of interest to them (to make consistent
proof of how you should be targeting the various segments, etc.).

Would love to hear if other readers have suggestions, too!

Hi Michael-

My pleasure to share! So glad to hear that the remarks (at least the ones
you were able to hear) were valuable. I hope you had a great rest of the
conference as well!

Thanks 🙂

I got to the conference just as your presentation was ending. Even though I only heard a few minutes of your presentation, that was still the most useful part of the conference for me.

I asked the question about how you recommend we push our co-workers (and managers) along who are in different stages along this spectrum. You mentioned brown baggers, which I love. Do you have any other thoughts? Especially wondering how to move people past the “shiny new thing” syndrome and focusing their attention on how to better use tools we are already using.
